Workshops

The Makerspace does not currently have the capacity to run regular workshops. However, we are often asked by individuals or groups if they can use the space to run a workshop. The answer to that question is “Yes! But!”. We have some pretty strict rules and criteria for using our space to run a workshop. So, without further ado…

Are you a UF community member interested in hosting a workshop in the Makerspace?

What kind of workshops can you host?

Workshops must be open to the public for signup via LibCal and the topic of the workshop must be grounded in the development of core maker skills, such as workshops on how to use specific equipment, how to make specific items, how to repair items, etc.

Who can host a workshop?

Any UF faculty, staff or student can host a community workshop as long as it is not for a vendor, and the applicant is willing to provide a lesson plan for their workshop (included in the application process).

When can workshops be hosted?

Workshops can be hosted during regular makerspace hours (Monday-Friday 2pm-7), can run for 1-2 hours, and cannot occur on the same day as a pre-existing event or makerspace closure. Additionally, we cannot have more than one community-led workshop per month.

Where can workshops take place?

Makerspace equipment cannot be taken out of the makerspace, so all workshops must take place in the space itself and not in another location with makerspace equipment. As a note, Makerspace workshops have a maximum capacity of 15 people due to space restrictions.

What do you need to do to host a workshop in the space?

You must submit an application at least one month prior to your expected workshop date. In the application, you will need to include any slides that you wish to use during your workshop, a lesson plan which outlines what you plan to do, and an outline of any machines and/or supplies you will need to use from the Makerspace.

What is expected of me before, during, and after the workshop?

You will need to arrive at least 15 minutes before your workshop is scheduled to start so you can set up any equipment and supplies needed for your workshop. During the workshop, you will have at least one Makerspace staff member there to assist as needed. After the workshop, you will be expected to clean up any and all materials and supplies used and return the space to the way it was before the workshop.
