Ever wondered why our sewing machines in the Makerspace have such peculiar names attached to them? Well, we actually had our open-lab facilitators name them! For some reason, cat names, and some other silly things, seemed to be the top pick for our Makerspacers. Here’s a little peek into the reasoning behind their names.
This is Venus (yes, after the planet), an Eversewn Sewing Machine. Cared for by Angie! This machine was named after her own cat, who is a Libra and was named after the corresponding planet. She is super feisty and loves to play!

Next is Bonnie, a Janome Sewing Machine, cared for by Sarah! Infamously named after the outlaws Bonnie and Clyde, and of course Sarah’s cat. Bonnie is angsty like a teenage girl, is super silly, and loves to cuddle!

Now we have Meiko! Another Eversewn Sewing Machine, cared for by Valeria. Meiko is named after Valeria’s best friends’ cat, yes, yet again another cat! She is a shy sweetheart who just loves to cuddle all day long.

Last of the kitties we have Sister Mei (tole tole) and Gupitaro. Two internet famous cats which Hope has named her Eversewn and Janome Sewing Machines after. These kitties are famously known for their silly cute faces on several social media platforms!

Now finally steering away from cat names, we have Embroidery McEmbroiderFace, a Brother Embroidery Machine named by Austin! The inspiration for this name came after this polar research vessel below, Boaty McBoatFace, which was comically suggested by BBC Radio Presenter James Hand in 2016.

Here we have Stan, a Juki Serger Machine! Named after the beloved television character from the cartoon “South Park” by Lilly. She chose Stan as he is the voice of reason amongst his friend group and will always give viewers a good laugh.

Last but not least, we have Hobi, a Brother Embroidery Machine cared for by Ace! She chose this name as Hobi is her favorite artist. Hobi is a nickname for beloved Korean BTS artist J-Hope.
