Creating Files
If you want to create your own design to 3D print, there are many different available software options. Any option that yields an STL file is acceptable to print with us. However, our specific recommendations are Tinkercad, Fusion, and Blender.
Tinkercad
Tinkercad is a beginner friendly and free software for 3D modeling. If you are interested in learning 3D modeling but do not know where to begin, Tinkercad is a great place to start. The following video gives a concise and thorough walkthrough of the software.
Onshape
Onshape is a free, completely browser-based 3D modeling software best suited for people who want to dive into parametric 3D modeling but may not have a fast enough computer to run dedicated programs. The official Onshape wiki has a great getting started tutorial going over all the basics and much more for those who want to dig deeper. Sign up with this educational link that will give you access to all the features on top of keeping all files private to your account!
Fusion
Fusion is best for people interested in more intermediate to advanced 3D modeling. While it is normally a paid service, UF students are able to access it for a free one-year trial! On Autodesk Fusion for Education, select the student plan and enter your UF email, along with the university’s information. After that, you should get an email confirmation of your free trial. The following link provides a detailed course on how to use Fusion.
Blender
Blender is another free software that is mainly used for modeling and animation. If you are looking to model something very specific or are interested in the more artistic aspects of 3D rendering, Blender may be the right fit for you. It is one of the more complicated options and better for more advanced experience. The follow video shows you how to use blender as a beginner.
Multicolor Print Files
In order to print a multicolor file, you will need to submit a 3mf file. To do that, you will need to have your STL file and PrusaSlicer downloaded onto your computer. As you configure your PrusaSlicer, you will want to select “Original Prusa XL – 5T Input Shaper w/ 0.6 mm nozzle” as the printer, PLA as the Filament type, and Jessie PLA as the vendor. This will give you the most accurate product when we go to print it for you.
Brint your STL into PrusaSlicer, and “paint” it the colors you want (Maximum 5 colors). See this video below for instructions on how to do that:
Save your file as a project so it saves as a 3mf file, then compress it as a zip so you can upload it to our order form.
