Need some guidance? Consider these prompts to get you going!
The challenge: Design the Ideal Fidget Toy
Idea formation:
- What sensory feedback are you targeting? (It’s okay to focus on just one sensation, like clicking, rolling, stretching)
- Who will be your user base, and what do they need to regulate? (e.g. Stimming? Anxiety? Attention?)
- Is there a fidget device you like, but it could be better? How so? Look at the samples on the table by the display in front of the Makerspace and try modifying one to get you started.

Design Cycle:
- Brainstorm ideas + sketch a prototype
- Decide which materials will be used and why
- Think about the sensations you are targeting. What materials can isolate those sensations?
- Build a prototype and test it
- This part is important! It could be great in theory, but your target user base hates it! Get feedback from people, and importantly:
- Based on how the testing went, refine your design/make changes
- Add flair and style, this is your creation, after all!
Resources:
The Makerspace is open 12pm-7pm Monday to Friday. We have sewing machines, crochet needles, small hand tools, electronics, general crafts, and a reuse station. The space specifically purchased bearings (rotation), buttons (clicking), hinges (snapping), springs (compression), fabric (texture) and more for use during this challenge.
Also, we recommend checking out Repurpose Project, as they have a lot of upcycled materials that can be great for prototyping!

Participation:
If you can’t find people to test your design on, come to the makerspace! Our student assistants will be happy to provide feedback!
