We’re thrilled to share some exciting news: thanks to the generosity of a longtime donor, our Makerspace now has a Bernina L 890! This is a professional-grade serger + coverstitch combo machine from a high-end Swiss company.

The L 890 is known for its precision, speed, and versatility. It can produce beautifully finished seams, rolled hems, stretch-friendly garment construction, and polished coverstitch hems. It’s the kind of equipment many makers only encounter in professional studios, and we feel incredibly lucky to be able to offer access to it here.
Why this machine is special
This is a powerful and sophisticated machine. Unlike standard sewing machines, this serger/coverstitch combo machine:
- Cuts, stitches, and finishes raw edges simultaneously
- Creates durable seams for knit and stretch fabrics
- Produces professional-looking hems on garments
- Uses multiple threads and loopers in carefully balanced systems
- Requires precise threading and setup to work correctly
That sophistication is exactly what makes it such an amazing learning opportunity… and also why we want to be thoughtful about how it’s used.
An educational pathway (not a barrier)
We absolutely want people to use this machine. Our goal isn’t to restrict access, it’s to set everyone up for success while protecting a high-value piece of shared equipment.
To use the Bernina L 890 in the Makerspace, we ask that users complete a short certification process:
Step 1: Take the online course (about 35 minutes)
This covers:
- How to properly thread the machine and change a needle
- How to adjust tension, pressure, stitch length, and cutting width
- How to use the inbuilt tutorials and creative consultant
Step 2: Score 80% or higher on the quiz
Step 3: Receive your laminated wallet card
Once you pass, you’ll be issued a small laminated card that serves as proof of certification. Just show it to staff when you’d like to use the machine.

Why we do it this way
This approach helps us:
- Prolong the life of a very special machine
- Reduce maintenance and downtime
- Prevent avoidable threading or tension issues
- Minimize broken needles, loopers, and timing problems
- Make sure users feel confident at the machine
Most importantly, it creates a shared culture of care around our tools.
When everyone understands how the machine works, everyone benefits.
So! Are you ready to level up your sewing?
If you already sew and have been curious about sergers or coverstitching, this is a fantastic chance to expand your skills. And if you’ve never used one before but want to learn, this certification is designed to be your on ramp.
