Did you know that you can hand engrave in the makerspace?
We have a rotary tool (often called a Dremel) and engraving bits available just for that! Hand engraving is a great way to personalize small objects, experiment with surface design, and add a custom touch to everyday items.

Safety First
Before you begin, make sure you’re set up safely:
- Always wear safety glasses
- Wear a mask when appropriate, especially when engraving materials that produce fine dust (like wood or certain plastics, and glass)
If you’re unsure which safety gear is needed for your material, ask a Makerspace staff member—we’re happy to help.
Getting Started with Hand Engraving
Hand engraving is very approachable, even if you’ve never used a rotary tool before. Here’s how to begin:
- Draw your design
Start by sketching your design directly onto the material you want to engrave. Pencil works well for wood, while permanent marker is helpful for metal or glass.

- Insert the engraving bit
Place the engraving bit into the rotary tool. To do this, hold down the lock button on the tool and use the mini wrench included in the rotary kit to tighten the bit securely.

- Power on and engrave
Turn on the rotary tool and gently begin tracing along your drawn design. Go slowly—light pressure gives you more control and cleaner lines.

- Take breaks and adjust
Pause as needed to check your progress. You can always deepen lines gradually by going over them again.

What Can You Make?
Hand engraving opens up a lot of creative possibilities. You can:
- Personalize jewelry
- Engrave wooden items
- Make custom dog tags
- Etch glass
- And so much more!
Whether you’re adding initials, creating a meaningful gift, or just experimenting with a new technique, hand engraving is a versatile skill worth trying.
Stop by the Makerspace and give it a try—we’d love to see what you create! ✨
